Dawn Fields Wise is an award-winning screenwriter and playwright based in Virginia and much of her work is inspired by her childhood growing up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, as well as her adulthood living in a town that has struggled to overcome its history steeped in racial division. Due to eight years spent working in a predominantly African-American historic graveyard, she believes the strongest stories are told by under-represented voices and continuously strives for authenticity and historical accuracy in her writing, preferring to work side-by-side her actors when creating a script, particularly those of diversity.
Her monologues and one-act plays on both slavery and women have been commissioned by the National Endowment of the Arts, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the Official Virginia Civil War Sesquicentennial. Her scripts have taken top honors at the Virginia Film Festival and the Nashville Film Festival, and her screenplay, THE POEM, was chosen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a Nicholl Quarterfinalist. Additionally, her pilot about the first African-American police force in Atlanta, GATE CITY, was the winner of the Industry Insider Television Writing Contest, was one of seven selections for the Showtime Channel’s Tony Cox Episodic Competition and was a finalist in the Orchard Theater’s Inaugural Episodic Lab. She most recently was an Impact x Netflix finalist through Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Impact studio deals arm—an honor bestowed upon less than 1% of its applicants. She currently has a Mike Tyson biopic in development with Baha Productions.
Before graduating from the University of Virginia with a degree in History that sparked her career in writing, Ms. Wise was a successful actor in commercials and on stage and was a national spokesperson for Microsoft. Soon after college, she combined her love of acting and history and founded Old City Cemetery Candlelight Tours where she was the Creative Director and scriptwriter for the outdoor theater company for 14 years. The historical tours bring together professional actors and playwrights from across the country and have been performed for over 30,000 patrons. The tours are highly acclaimed and tickets are equally coveted, selling out within hours of going on sale every year.
